Scottaconda
Q: So how did it all begin?
A: It’s really embarassing, but I started “mixing” when I was in grade school. I used to take an old tape recorder and put it up to my TV to record songs from MTV, BET, Anime and Video games.
Q: Where did the name come from?
A: Ummm…. Thats a bit of a private story. You’ll have to ask me in person.
Q: What was the first event you ever played at/put on?
A: It was at a friend’s house party. Very small and low key, but it was hype all the same. I wasn’t very good then, but I had the party jumpin still.
Q: What’s the best event you’ve played at/put on?
A: It had to have been over on my first year DJing for N.A.P. back in ’08. I think I surprised the crowd and the dancers when I played DJ Assault’s “Ass N’ Titties” track.
Q: What’s you favourite tune of all time?
A: It’s kind of a toss-up between a few, but if I had to pick one for now, I would say “Intergalactic” by the Beastie Boys.
Q: What’s is your real name if you use an alias and how old are you?
A: Scott Mellor and I’m 27.
Q: What advice would you give to up and coming DJs/Promoters?
A: Stick with what you’re passionate about no matter what. It takes a lot of dedication and hardwork to get where you wanna be. “If you put nothing in, you have nothing to lose.”
Q: When you play are your sets pre-palnned?
A: Not always. I have a general idea as to what kind of groove I want to set, but I try to keep myself on my toes and leave myself open to experimentation.
Q: If you could stage a rave anywhere, where would you choose?
A: Nowhere better than Chicago! As to a specific place, I’d like to just rent out a large warehouse that’s far away from residencies.
Q: Who taught you to spin? How long have you been DJ’ing for?
A: My official instructors are DJ OpM and DJ Beryl Turner. They have helped me a lot without holding my hand. They said I had a lot of potential, just needed some guidance and direction. They were right. I’ve been DJing officially for 7 years.
Q: Are you a fan of white gloves and glow sticks?
A: I’m a fan of what helps people express themselves. It doesn’t matter if you breakdance, pop lock, liquid or shuffle. It’s all about the energy and freedom of expression.
Q: What would be your ideal or dream gig?
A: Playing in the largest stadium in the world being broadcast to everyone in the world. This gig would be the dream gig to change borders between finite love of music. It would also be the gig where everyone’s heart and feet were all beating to the same rhythm.
Q: We know how you spend your evenings — so what do you do on a weekday?
A: I do a normal blue collar job and play video games. I also love to eat.
Q: So where can we catch you ripping up the decks?
A: Regularly at the East Madison Community Center where I promote keeping kids off the streets and away from violence by refocusing that energy to Bboy styles and being an MC. My convention and club events change often.
Q: Is there any type of music you won’t use?
A: Country and polka music.
Q: How do you decide what you’re going to play every night?
A: The crowd and scene.
Q: How did you turn into the person that is DJ Scottaconda today?
A: Through the everlasting support of my mentors, my fans and soon to be wife.
Q: What is your favorite venue? And place you’ve DJed?
A: It’s hard to say. There’s a lot of good reasons at each place.
Q: Sounds like you need a vacation. Where would you go if you could?
A: Japan or back to the Filippines. I also hear Hawaii is nice lol!
Q: What’s your next stop for your music and your career? Do you have next big gig lined up?
A: I go wherever my music takes me. My style and music likes are always changing and at the same time melding together. I also really want to step into producing my own music and getting some big names onto my projects. I’d be extremely happy to collect talents not just from the underground but from mainstream as well. Next event I will be DJing for is Geek.kon. I love doing this event because I feel at home ^_^
