Q: So how did it all begin?
A: I was sitting in my car one day, and it was the first time I listened to dance music. I heard Darude’s Sandstorm and I fell in love with Dance Music as a whole. A couple of months later I went to my first concert and I saw Tiesto perform live and saw hundreds of individuals all from different backgrounds and different walks of life all jumping together to the beat. At that point I knew I wanted to become a DJ.
Q: Where did the name come from?
A: I was at football practice in high school and my defensive line coach asked me, “Hey Kris! How come you missed the whole summer camp?” I told him, “Sir, I had to help get money for tuition.” He understood and asked me where I was working. I told him that I was working for Burger King. Later that day we were running drills and I forgot to yell “pass” and I hear out of the corner of my ear, “Big King how are we gonna hear about the 99 cent special if you don’t open your f’in mouth!” That nickname stuck with me all through HS. One day I was DJing at a club and I went under my name Kris at the time. All of a sudden I hear “BIG KING! BIG KING!” I turned on the house lights and some guys from my football team were all there, so I guess it just stuck with me.
Q: What was the first event you ever played at or put on?
A: It was my 1st gig after coming back into DJing after 5 years. I was sitting at a hole-in-the-wall bar with my friends and my friend E-Dub was spinning. We had a convo about how I use to DJ and he was like, “You wana grab some music and throw down?” I said ok and grabbed some CDs from my car. So I was up in a bar with 20 of my friends and a handful of locals and I got everyone in the club jumping. Even a 60 year old man came up and said, “I have never heard this music before but I like it!”
Q: What’s the best event you’ve played at or put on?
A: The best event I put on was when I threw my sisters B-day party at this club and we had about 100 people in there and they were all jumping at the same time. My set was perfect, everything went as planned and everyone had an amazing time.
Q: What’s you favorite tune of all time?
A: David Guetta – “The World Is Mine.”
Q: What advice would you give to up and coming DJs/Promoters?
A: Practice, practice, practice… until you can do it in your sleep. Network, network, network… you never know who you’re going to meet.
Q: When you playdo you pre-plan your sets?
A: It starts off that way, but there is a lot of thinking while you’re on your feet.
Q: If you could stage a rave anywhere, where would you choose?
A: An empty warehouse in the middle of summer in Chicago.
Q: Who taught you to spin?
A: Me lots of trial and error.
Q: How long have you been DJing for?
A: 5 years.
Q: Are you a fan of white gloves and glow sticks?
A: No doubt!
Q: What would be your ideal or dream gig?
A: Sensation White @ the Amsterdam Arena.
Q: We know how you spend your evenings — so what do you do on a weekday?
A: IT Support.
Q: Is there any type of music you won’t use?
A: No
Q: How do you decide what you’re going to play every night?
A: It all depends on what the crowd is feeling, how it sounds to me, and if you can see people dancing to it.
Q: How did you turn into the person that is DJ Big King today?
A: Just being myself.
Q: Sounds like you need a vacation. Where would you go if you could?
A: Europe… Good music… Beautiful beaches… Change is always good.
Q: What’s your next stop for your music and your career? Do you have next big gig lined up?
A: Rock Box May 21st 2010
